EXCERPT:

from Maggie’s Mystery Man by Barb DeLong:
The investigative reporter in Maggie flared to life. She wanted to know the 5 Ws of Mystery Man. Who was he really? What was he doing here? Where was he from? When was he leaving? Why was he so, well, mysterious?

from Once Upon a Love Letter by Jill Jaynes
Chloe blinked up at the guy standing before her. Her glance slid up over the black leather jacket that accentuated his slim waist and broad shoulders, then settled on his face: green eyes, ruffled auburn hair, killer smile complete with dimple. He’d been a heart-throb basketball star in high school, and her secret (okay, maybe not so secret) crush for her whole junior year. He’d apparently grown into the full powers of his charm.

TV Review: Hairspray Live

Hairspray Live! is probably the only NBC musical event that they couldn't kill and they didn't.

It featured an all star cast that included the likes of Kristin Chenoweth , Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Martin Short and Harvey Firestein and new comer Maddie Baillio as Tracy Turnblad

I have a huge issue with the way these live musicals work on tv, because the hosts or whatever they are called have to be all perky and happy at the commercial breaks.

But as for the musical...well there are some things that just didn't sit well with me, and it had nothing to do with  the music or the singing, I'd say all the performers were pretty spot on and delivered a pretty close to perfect performance.

What I found annoying were the way some of the characters were portrayed.

I found I liked Michelle Pffiefer's Mrs. Von Tussele more evil sounding...whereas Kristen Chenoweth came across as bitchy, which was the same for Amber.

Probably the most surprising and sometimes disappointing performance was Ariana Grande as Penny. She was freaking adorable in the role, until she talks and she turns into Cat again. ARGH!

Martin Short was awesome as Mr. Turnblad, almost as good as Christopher Walken. He was beyond lovable.

The other character I wasn't fond of was Link. Garrett Clayton didn't have the charisma of Zac Efron. Don't get me wrong, he had the hot factor going on. I admit to feeling like a cougar watching him, but I just didn't fall in love for him the way I did with Zac's Link.

Harvey Fierstein's Edna is one I had a love/hate relationship with. Yes, he played Edna on Broadway and won a Tony for it, but Travola's Edna was more motherly and lovable.

Overall, this was a fun night of music, not much to complain about.

Goddess Fish Book Promotions: Tale of the Lizard

The Lizard’s Tale
by Kurt Kamm

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Mystery/Crime Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Kurt Kamm has written a novel that's a literary crime novel, with a strong thread of non-fiction running through it. The Lizard's Tale is a tale of crime—with an a wide-ranging cast of characters.

When the DEA goes up against the Sinaloa Cartel, an orphan and an endangered lizard are caught in the conflict. The action moves from Guatemala to Mexico to Catalina Island off the coast of California.

Alejandro, a middle class Guatemalan, wants his share, and makes a deal with the cartel. Now he’s risking his life to deliver the goods.

El Dedo, a brilliant financier, is the Sinaloa Cartel’s banker. He worries about what to do with the billions of dollars collecting dust in his underground vault.

Ryan, a DEA Special Agent, needs to make a high profile case to get a promotion. Is the big yacht headed for California carrying a Mexican drug shipment?

Kate, a wildlife officer on Catalina Island, smells smoke. When she heads out in the middle of the night to investigate a fire, she makes an astonishing discovery.

Jorge, an orphan from the streets of Mexico, is abandoned in the United States. Will he find his way back home and track down his mother’s killer?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
Dedo was one of the few outsiders at the top of the cartel hierarchy. He came from a different background than most of the drug lords, who had grown up in poor towns in the Sierra Madres where people suffered a hard existence living in hovels made of cinderblocks. Dedo had no poverty to escape. He grew up in Mexico City and lived a blessed childhood. His father owned a small Mexican chemical business that grew large when it began to supply the Cartels with the ingredients used to make methamphetamine. His mother was Swiss, and had worked for a chemical company in Basle when she met his father. Dedo inherited his intellect and business sense from his father. His grey eyes came from his mother.
When his father brought him to the State of Sinaloa for the first time, Dedo stood in the dust and blasting heat and felt the moisture evaporating from his skin. “Those mountain highlands,” his father had told him, pointing off into the distance, “are ideal for growing poppies. All they need is sunlight and moisture.” Then he turned and pointed in the direction of the Pacific Ocean, and continued, “And out in those valleys between the mountains and the coast, the climate is perfect for growing marijuana.” Finally, his father looked at Dedo and told him, “Fortunately for us, sunshine and water don’t produce methamphetamine. For that, they need chemicals—a lot of chemicals—and that’s why we’re here.”
Interview with Jorge, or La Cuiza, A Character in TALE OF THE LIZARD
Before proceeding with the interview, it is important to know Jorge's backstory. Maria Gabriella, the beautiful prostitute who has become the mistress of Dedo, the banker for the Sinaloa Cartel, describes Jorge as follows:
There’s a young boy, his real name is Jorge, but everyone calls him the La Cuiza—the Little Gecko—because he collects lizards.”
Maria Gabriella says she wants to bring Jorge to live at Dedo's mansion. She explains that Jorge is the son of one of the prostitutes she once worked with and his mother is dead:
Jorge was only five at the time, and after Luisa was killed, he had no one. We took turns, caring for him for a few days or weeks, but that was all anyone could do. No one had the time to raise a child. He has never had a real home and now that he’s older, he just drifts
from place to place, sleeping in someone’s entryway or kitchen, eating meals wherever he finds them.”
Jorge is not a normal child. He has had a severe traumatic shock—he has watched a man kill his mother:
The room was filled with the lemon scent his mamá wore when she worked, and the odor of rancid sweat from the naked body grinding away on top of her. The man, who had come many times to visit his mother, intensified his efforts. The bed shook and the sagging web of springs holding the filthy mattress pressed down on top of Jorge. In a few months, he would be six—too big to crawl under his mother’s bed.
A cuiza, a small, unremarkable gray-green gecko, crawled through the dust on the concrete floor under the bed, trapped between Jorge and the wall.
No, dammit, no, no,” the man bellowed. The bed stopped swaying.
Jorge heard the sound of a hand slapping flesh and his mamá whimpered.
You pig,” the man said. “Do better than that. Damn you.”
The second impact was louder, harder. Jorge heard her high-pitched cry. He reached for the gecko and it flattened itself against the concrete, remaining motionless in the dust. Its head was inches from Jorge's face. He looked at its black eyes and it stared back. A live insect—a tiny fly—struggled in its jaws. The little lizard swallowed the insect.
The man became furious and the blows were more powerful. This had happened before, but it had never gone on so long or sounded so brutal. His mother’s cries turned to screams and Jorge tried not to listen. He grabbed the cuiza's tail with his fingers.
The gecko made a chirping sound—chik, chik, chik—shed its tail, and skittered away.
The force of the final blow knocked his mamá off the bed. From his hiding place, Jorge saw the brown skin of her naked back as she lay on the floor.
As a result of the emotional shock, Jorge has become what psychologists call a selective mute. This means that although he is capable of talking, he has withdrawn into himself and does not speak. As a result of the juxtaposition of his mother's death and the gecko he sees under her bed, Jorge has become obsessed with lizards, and the only words he utters are chik, chik, chik, the series of three chirps which is the sound of the gecko.
With this background, we can now proceed to the interview:
INTERVIEWER: Jorge, tell us what you saw when you descended into Dedo's underground vault.
JORGE: Chik, chik, chik.
INTERVIEWER: The vault supposedly had billions of dollars of American cash. Is that true?
JORGE: Chik, chik, chik.
INTERVIEWER: Uh huh. Ok, perhaps you could describe the trip you took to Catalina Island on Dedo's yacht.
JORGE: Chik, chik, chik.
INTERVIEWER: Well, young man, thank you. Your comments have been very interesting.
JORGE: Chik, chik, chik.
Does Jorge ever say anything but "Chik, chik, chik?" Does he ever get over his trauma and regain his voice? Read TALE OF THE LIZARD and find out!
He watched the man’s bare foot poke her and then push her body aside before he walked out the room. When Jorge crawled out from under the bed, he saw the blood dripping from his mother’s face, collecting in a small red pool on the floor. He wanted to wake her, but his brain no longer controlled his voice. His throat was frozen—no words came. Jorge lay down on the floor, curled up next to his mamá, and cried silent tears. Above him, he saw the tailless gecko climbing the bedroom wall.
“” The Cuiza made the gecko sound, ,
Goddess Fish Promotions Book Blast: The Pawn
The Pawn
by Skye Warren
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The price of survival…
Gabriel Miller swept into my life like a storm. He tore down my father with cold retribution, leaving him penniless in a hospital bed. I quit my private all-girl’s college to take care of the only family I have left.
There’s one way to save our house, one thing I have left of value.
My virginity.
A forbidden auction…
Gabriel appears at every turn. He seems to take pleasure in watching me fall. Other times he’s the only kindness in a brutal underworld.
Except he’s playing a deeper game than I know. Every move brings us together, every secret rips us apart. And when the final piece is played, only one of us can be left standing.
THE PAWN is a full-length contemporary novel from New York Times bestselling author Skye Warren about revenge and seduction in the game of love.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

Kinky stuff,” Gabriel says, the corner of his mouth turned up. “What do you know about kinky stuff?”

My face feels hot. “I’ve seen the movie, okay? I know about things.”

That’s a lie. I squirmed through the movie, lips parted in shock. How did people think of this stuff? Why would any girl like it? And I’m not just a random face in this city. My picture has appeared in the society papers. People know my father. Maybe some of the men were cheated by him, just like Gabriel. Would they want to hurt me in revenge?

Tell me what you know,” Gabriel says.

The words are mocking, but something sparks inside me. “I know that some men like to hurt women. I know it makes them feel big and strong to hurt someone weaker.”

And are you weak, little virgin?”

No, I want to say. Except I’ve lost everything in the past two months. My life, my school. My friends. I’m a shadow of my former self. Little virgin makes me fight back, though. Gabriel makes me fight back. “I’m doing what I have to do. Is that weak?”

His gaze flickers over my body, the yellow of his eyes brighter in the lamp’s glow. When he meets my eyes, there’s a begrudging respect.

Goddess Fish Promotions Book Blast: Girl In The Water

Girl in the Water
by Dana Marton

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romantic Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:
After the tragic death of his family, Ian, fresh home from the Army, is a shadow of his former self. Only his best friend's disappearance in South America pulls him back from the ledge. He rushes to Brazil, but he gets there too late. The best he can do now is find his friend's murderers. As the two of them track down clues and try to untangle an impossible case, they draw the attention of all the wrong people, and danger follows them back to the US.

Ian wants the murderers. Daniela wants Ian to acknowledge the hot sparks of passion between them. He doesn't mind breaking rules, just never his own. Rule #1: You don't seduce the woman you protect

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
A couple of boats had been dragged up on the flat of the riverbank. Nobody around. Ian sat in the shade of the largest boat and pretended to be watching the barges and tugboats going past him.
He stole a glance at the house, hoping to spot Finch. Nothing there, but something rising out of the water maybe thirty feet from him caught his attention.
At first, he thought it might be a caiman—South America’s version of an alligator. Caimans were native to the area, although, he had no idea if they lived in this part of this particular river.
But instead, out of the river, rose a young woman.
She seemed to be struggling with…an anaconda?
When the shiny black, long body wrapped around hers, Ian moved, ready to dive into the water to help her, but she had the upper hand and dragged the wriggling beast toward shore with a triumphant smile, and he could see that she had a giant eel.
He couldn’t take his eyes off the thing. The eel stretched as long as the woman was tall, over five feet. They wrestled in the mud, the scene stunningly primal and elemental.
She had a piece of rag tied around her small breasts, and another around her slim waist, covering only the private parts of her body. She was the most stunning sight he’d ever seen, long dark hair streaming down in wet rivulets. A goddess risen.
A goddess in mortal struggle.
His western sensibilities pushed him to run and help, but the woman and the eel and their battle seemed somehow the spirit of the Amazon itself, and he felt like an interloper. He felt that he couldn’t take the woman’s triumph away from her.
And she did win, dragging the eel to shore, grabbing a rock the next second and smashing the eel’s head. The eel was still squirming when, with the same, sharp-edged rock, she gutted the thing, dumping the insides back into the river. She was not a peaceful goddess.
She washed the eel efficiently, then picked up the carcass and carried it, staggering under the weight, up the tall, steep bank, and in through the back door of the house Ian had been watching.
Ian’s chin might have dropped a little. Or a lot. In fact, he felt as if his chin just hit his lap.
Who on earth was she?
